The origin of the Doberman Pinscher is rather cloudy, but it is believed that this breed initiated in Germany in 1900. The dog is named for Louis Dobermann of Apolda, a tax collector. Dobermann wanted a dog of medium size to use as a guard dog and also as a companion. Breeds that were used to create the Doberman Pinscher might have included the Rottweiler, the old short-haired shepherd, the German Pinscher and the Black and Tan Terrier.

The Doberman Pinscher is a square, muscular, medium size dog. He has great speed and endurance along with an elegant appearance that shows a great temperament. Being highly intelligent and able to absorb training has put him in high demand with the police and the military. This breed has a short, hard coat that can be fawn, black, blue and red in color.

While he does need regular exercise, his short does not need excessive grooming.
