It is believed that the Siberian Husky originated from the Chukchi Tribe that lived off of the eastern peninsula of Siberia. In 1908, they were used in the All-Alaskan Sweepstakes, which was a dogsled race 408 miles long. In World War II, they also were put into service with the Army’s Artic Search and Rescue Unit.

The Siberian Husky was bred to be a sled dog in Northeast Asia, and are known for their eagerness to work as well as their impressive endurance. Their outgoing and agreeable personality make them a terrific dog all around as well as being ideal for sledding, therapy work and many other tasks. Having originated in colder climates, Siberian Huskies carry a thicker coat than most other dogs. It consists of a dense undercoat and a coarse, longer top coat. They come in all colors from pure white to black, with varied markings on their heads.

Very beautiful to look at and friendly to play with, the Siberian Husky is relatively easy to maintain. Even though their coats are quite thick, they only need to be brushed once a week. Owners must be able to provide a way to give them daily exercise. This can be done by daily walks or by giving them an enclosed area where they can run. As these dogs have very strong predatory instincts, they must be supervised when placed around smaller animals either in the home or around it. These dogs make excellent pets.
