Oddly enough, today’s Miniature Australian Shepherd has nothing to do with Australia. They originated in the region falling between France and Spain called Basque and were put to work as a sheepherder. They got their name because so many Basque shepherds were from Australia. The Miniature Australians Shepherds were created through using a band of small Aussies by North America Breeders. They intended to make a trimmer version of this breed without surrendering the trait of dependability and sharp instincts. Clearly, they accomplished their goal.

These resilient and rustic dogs are longer than they are tall. With a slightly round head, almond-shaped eyes, and muzzle of medium length; they also have high triangular ears, deep chests and straight tails. Their medium length coat is weather resistant and somewhat wavy, which gives them a small mane. They come in colors of blue merle, black, red merle, red, and red with white or tan patches. The result of all these traits is a cuddly and rugged appearance.

A very loveable trait of the Miniature Australian Shepherds is that they seem to forever retain their puppy phase. These dogs are excellent with children. In fact, the more active the child the happier the breed is. However, they maintain an innate gentleness that never allows play to become rough. In addition, they possess an eagerness to work. When they are given a job to do, they will complete with plenty of energy leftover. They have superb guarding instincts along with a fierce loyalty to their human families.
