Originating in the British Isles, the English Bulldog is descended from the old Asiatic Mastiff. This breed was named "bull" due to it being used for bull baiting along with carrying the robust look of a small bull. These dogs were ferocious, courageous and aggressive along with being powerful enough to assault adult bulls. In fact, that is what they used to do in arena combat until the practice was outlawed in the 18th century. Bulldogs attacked by going from the bottom up under the bull and aimed for its neck. This made it difficult for the bull to defend itself. The bulldogs seen today have a much different temperament than that of his ancestors. However, this breed still has a strong determination.

Today, the English Bulldog is friendly, gentle and adoring. He is also mischievous and slightly stubborn. Extremely loyal to his family, the English Bulldog typically gets on agreeably with other animals and has a particular fondness for children. This high spirited puppy grows into a calm adult and likes it better indoors.

Caring of the English Bulldog is simple as he only requires regular brushing by using a rough cloth and minimal exercise. He needs his fold, wrinkles and tail underside powdered in hot weather.
