The Cane Corso is an Italian breed that was used to hunt wild boar and guard property. Before 1988, this breed was only found in southern Italy, and was believed to be quite rare. The Cane Corso is one of two mastiff type breeds native to Italy and can claim the Roman canis Pugnaces as their ancestors. Their name is from the Latin word "Cohors" meaning "Protector" or "Guardian."

The Cane Corso is a very intelligent breed and easy to train. As they are large and athletic, lots of exercise is a must. They will need to be walked several times daily or have a fenced in area where they can exercise on their own. These are affectionate dogs and form a very close bond with their human family. The coat of a Cane Corso is short and quite thick and coarse rather than smooth so that it is completely waterproof. These coats can be gray, black, red, or fawn with various brindle versions. They can also carry a gray or black mask. This is a light shedding breed which makes for simple grooming. They just need to be brushed occasionally.
