Bold and cheerful, the American Cocker Spaniel has earned the nickname “merry” cocker. This breed dates back to the 1800’s when English Cocker Spaniels were bred for a smaller size in America. The smaller version was subsequently named American Cocker Spaniel. American Cocker Spaniels have a medium and sturdy frame excellent for hunting. Males will reach about 15 inches in height and females will reach about 14 inches in height. Adult American Cocker Spaniels range from 15 to 30 pounds in weight. Their long ears, chest, abdomen and legs are feathered. Their silky coat is of medium length and may come in white, red, black or tan. Coats may come in any solid and partial colors. Typically, American Cocker Spaniels are sweet and respectful of their owners. However, to avoid shyness this dog should be socialized well. In order to achieve the ideal temperament, this breed must be exercised with mentally and physically stimulating activities. Without proper stimulation, this dog will become hyperactive, fearful, viciously dominating and aggressive towards people. They cannot mentally handle living outside for long periods of time. They love to socialize and are willing to please. Cockers do excellent for households with children and small pets. This breed does well with Apartment dwellers who give them proper exercise.
