We like to use the med. size kiddy pools. They work very well and you can disinfect them every day. If you planning on making one out of wood the bugs are almost impossable to kill. Moms go outside and carrie in a numours amounts of germs that need to be cleaned up daily. Just a thought.

we made a whelping box out of car siding and a sheet of linolium under the box on the carpet. And sheets inside so that itcould be washed very easy. worked perfect until they outgrew the space and now take up 3/4 of the livingroom. They have aout 12x12 space now.

With a dog that size you also have to consider the size of the puppies and the fact that they will be in the whelping box for several weeks possibly. I have German Shepherd Dogs which weigh 70-80 lbs also. I designed 2 whelping boxes that work perfectly for the first month. They have front guilotine style doors that adjust to 3 heights so the dam can enter at will. I would advise against using the kiddy pools. I think pig rails are a must and kiddy pools are easy to clean and easy on the pet owner but not sufficient for the dam and litter. If you would like more info on my whelping box ideas feel free to email me at vonHasental@aol.com

go to the home depot and get two shets of plywood. Have them cut one into 4 4 x 2 sections. have them cut the other in half. They will cut it for you there if you ask. Ge a 2 x 4 and cut it into 4 2 sections. screw the 2 x 4 ply wod sheets to the stud sections. With the studs on the out side. This will give you a 4 x 4 box roughly. Put it in the basement and glue it to the floor with a god outdoor caulk. Screw sections of 2 x 4 stud around the top and fasten one of the half sheets on top with hinges. then cut a half door in one side so mama can get in and out but the little pups cant. Keep the piece and hang it back on with a hinge for a door. This is great with the lid its like a den but you can openit to clean etc. Shell love it. We put a piece of duct to a space heater on ours for warmth in the basement.
