I have a beautiful all black no markings AKC registered lab. I have always been on the other end of breeding. I contacted AKC but they forgot to tell me how old the male has to be to start breeding. There isnt very many males in our area and no black labs. Just how to do I get started? Any pointers or suggestions and does anyone know the proper age? I dont want to start him to early. Hes dropped and it being very dominate right not and has tried to not listen to me and is humping my females even though they arent in heat. He will even try to hump their heads

Your dog has to be two years old before OFA will certify his hips and elbows so that would be the earliest he should be bred. See www.offa.org for more information on that. You also want to have his eyes checked yearly by a vetrinary opthamologist. Any responsible breeder would also require a heart certifiaction and optigen testing before consider breeding to him. Labradors are terribly overbred so please dont breed your boy unless he truly has something to offer the breed. You can prove this by showing in conformation or competing in field trials hunt tests agility obedience...something. From your post I can tell you that your boy doesnt have basic obedience training so that would be a nice place to start. Good luck

Yes he does have basic obedience training. I also train dogs not just labs. I just wanted to know how I get started on the stud part of breeding.

From this... quoteHes dropped and it being very dominate right not and has tried to not listen to me and is humping my females even though they arent in heat. He will even try to hump their heads /quote hopefully you can see how I think/thought he lacks basic obedience. I did tell you haw to get started and I hope you take it to heart. A bitch owner can choose any stud in the country and many parts of the world why should they choose your boy?? Proving he has something to offer is a must and clearances are a no brainer. Whats his pedigree? Do you have any pics?

Yes is from over 9x championship bloodline. Yes I have pics but I dont feel that I need to post them right now. Like I said he just started the humping and has only done that once. I train far beyond the basic obedience Thank you very much Who are you to judge me and tell me that I need to train him more? You only know what I have said and that I only asked how to get started and that was all I asked. I really dont understand why everyone thinks they have to talk down to or judge others on this site

He must be at least 7 months old. Make sure to check all pedigrees prior to breeding so there is no inbreeding. Check with other breeders OFA records etc.. for any health and/or temperment issues in the bloodlines of both of them. What ever your male lacks in quality try to make that up with the female you breed him to and vice versa. Do a lot of research before breeding

AKC reconizes stud dogs at the age of 10 mouths of age. Females at the age of two years. AKC also suggests in breeding in a good pedigree family. Not closer than three generations. Alot of people breeders That tnink that they know it all and think that they are going to change the breed as we know it should tend to theyre own business. The blogs are here to help people not to put then down because you dont fall in to there idea of good breeding practices...Signed Friend

This boy Needs to be 2 years old so that he can be OFAd Hips and elbows he should be cerfd eyes starting at 1 year old He can be PRA tested at anytime. If you really want to produce healthy sound puppies/dogs this is how you get started any thing else leaves you as some that dose not care about there dogs and the people that will be buying them. You also need to get him titled field titles are what Lab people that hunt are looking for. Hunt test are a good way to start. Go to infodog.com. click show information and then click search by state they will give a list of upcoming events in your state. on the left is the club holding the event to the right is what kind of event it is. HT is the hunt test events click on the club name and it should tell you what you want. If you are close to Michigan we also have a very large dog show coming up the first weekend in March these will be thousands of dogs and people their. This is a benched show so the dogs will be there all day. Good luck Rebecca RKK KENNELS CHesapeake Bay Retrievers

With large and giant breed dogs 18 months old is when males are usually done developing...many people wait until males are 2 years old to be careful because some take more time to fully finish developing. Even though he is humping he really wont be finished developing until 18 months some males when bred too early can develop all sorts of problems such as prostate related issues which are painful. Humping is VERY normal for an intact male of any breed even after obedience training. I strongly recommend exercising him every day to reduce his humping energy. When he REALLY wants and needs to hump give him a big stuffed animal and give him some privacy.
