i was just wondering how long it usually takes for the females mammaries to shrink back to normal after weaning. I recently adopted a female that had just weaned her litter....its been a bout a month and there hasnt been much of a change.

Every dog has a differnt amount of time that they need to shrink back down and some never shrink completely. One thing you want to do though... check for lumps. Dogs can get breast cancer just like humans. I found out too late that if your dog has puppies and the ammaries dont shrink down, and they dont have puppies in the next heat or so, that they will be likely to get cancer and die from it.

after a heat cycle mammary glands can become enlarged due to a false pregnancy. they usually go down 3-6 weeks later. some stay a little more pronounced than before. spaying, usually helps bring them back to normal size. you can help bring them down by ice packing the glands 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes and reduce the amount of food for a few days to cut back lactation. if a mammary gland at any time feels too hot and enlarged, or has discharge other than milk. see a vet, they can get mastitis. after a pregnancy and litter, same can happen, but may take up to 12 weeks for mammaries to go back to as close to normal they can get. you can do same as above once pups are weaned. mammary cancer can happen to any bitch at any time. you only cut back close to 100 percent not getting it if spayed before first heat. intact females, as well as history in family of mammary cancer have a higher incidence of getting it. breeding them or not does not make much of a difference. same as people. it is good practice when bathing your bitch to feel for any lumps anywhere in body, and showing them to vet to be sure.
