| Is it when a dog is in heat that you breed them like after they stop bleeding? Or is it before they go into heat that you breed them? Nobody has really clarified this for me.

| You are not reading the right books.
You cannot breed a dog before it comes in heat and get puppies.
Here is site that has some good information http//www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2cat=1627articleid=898
http//www.sniksnak.com/doghealth/breeding.html
These are a couple of good sites that should give you the information you need

| I really would like to hear that you ve done lots and lots of research BEFORE becoming a breeder. A professional breeder becomes one not just learns it. A good professional breeder has lots of knowledge about their breeds taking care of their bitches BEFORE pregnancy during and after and how and what to do for the moms and then the babies once they arrive. I only breed my bitches every other heat cycle. I make sure they eat quality food at all times and puppy food during gestation. They are also dewormed 3 times a year and especially right before breeding. I also use Bronchisine on ALL of my dogs to avoid kennel cough. You have a lot to learn BEFORE breeding your bitch. Also please let any female go through her first heat cycle unbred and then if you choose to breed her the second time at about 18 months of age. If you LOVE your dogs be considerate and give them rest also.

| Do research before breeding.
It really helps you prepare because you many things can go wrong or you could hurt your male and/or female. For small dogs females are ready between day 8 and day 14 after swelling and blood first start. If you own both male and female then your male will be able to tell when the female is ready. Some people believe in holding the female but they can really do it all on their own unless the male is much smaller than the female.
Also when they are tied and they are just standing there waiting for the swelling to go down sometimes they will scream to want to get away from each other...that is the time when you should hold the female and comfort them both until the tie is finished.

| That sounded confusing... what I meant to say was that it is easier to keep the male and female together while she is in season so that they can naturally do their thing. But if you use someone elses stud that may not be an option. Heat cycles and peaks are usually different for different breeds so it is best to just keep the male with the female during this time.

| IF YOU DONT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS YOU SHOULDNT BE BREEDING DOGS
PLEASE RE CONSIDER. there are too many puppies born from parents in bred or unhealthy sometimes with life threatening birth defects or requiring very expensive painful surgery. If you really dont know about a dogs heat cycle you should probably not be breeding your dog.

| Please dont breed that dog A person should learn about breeding whelping complications and much more before breeding dogs. Will you have healthy marketable puppies? Have the parents been OFA certified? Do you have homes for them already? Do you have criteria for potential homes for the babies? There are many questions to be addressed before breeding. Breeding before knowledge creates a greater need for shelters and results in more dog euthanization. Please dont become a part of the problem. Wait

| When a dog starts bleeding she is actually in heat. She can ovulate and be ready for breeding anywhere from 7-20 days from then. USUALLY it is around the 12-13th day but if you breed then and get nothing , the next time she comes in take her to the vet as soon as she starts bleeding. They can do a progesterone test every few days and watch the hormone levels. This will tell you WHEN she is actually ovulating and when it is the DAY or few days one side or the other to breed.

| progesterone testing pinpoints ovulation the ideal time to breed depends on whether you are doing matual or AI the eggs are not ready until two days post ovulation . if you know what ypour doing you can get away with pulling one or two tests at the most
