Depends on what you are protecting, property, home or children! GSD would be an excellent choice though.

RE: Best Protection Dogs?
Well if you are protecting your family any large family dog would do the trick, as long as they are part of the family. Any dog will give its life for someone (S)he loves. For Property any of your protection dogs, Dobbies, Rotties, GSDs, Some of your Bull breeds ( I wont get in to which, there are so many) Basically the best thing for protecting property is you want a dog who gives the impression of Fearceness, their main objective is to intimidate the theif away prior to them entering the property. As far a home, same as family. Here is my guard dog...the big teady bear!!!

Australian Shepherds are also good family and watch/protection dogs, if you want something thats not in the large breed size. Look for working lines, if you dont want to deal with a lot of coat ;-).

yall are missing one of the best Family protection dogs...Belgian Malinois Excellent with Children if raised with them. Very social and EXTREMELY Loving Mine are wonderful dogs I have very many and am in LOVE with this breed I used to raise German Shepherds and they were just as happy in the other room or on the floor. My malys want to be with me all the time and right next to me when I am sitting down. Also with a Maly you dont have as many health problems if any really. Just socialize the heck out of them when they are young and they will be an excellent addition to your family Take a look at my website for more info...also visit the american belgian malinois website link on my site or http//www.american-belgian-malinois-club.org/ for more info on the breed. IF you want to know more please feel free to contact me

There was a man whom we will call the Dog Owner as he owned two fighting dogs. They were not fighting dogs by breed but because they had been trained to be aggressive. The Dog Owner also had several guns as he believed that it was one of his basic freedoms to possess guns. What is also worth mentioning is that the Dog Owner was a Klan recruiter with firm beliefs and he was living on a farm with his wife and 12-year-old son. Less than half a mile away from the Dog Owners farm house stood the home of his friend whom we will call the Neighbor. The Neighbor was living there with his wife and 5-year-old son whom we will call Billy. One evening Billy ventured out unsupervised and ran into the Dog Owners dogs who had just gotten loose. It of course does not take a hard guess to figure out what happened next. Among other injuries caused by the encounter Billy had half his face and one of his feet mauled off. Billy was taken to hospital where he died as the injuries to his neck involved many critical blood vessels that could not be repaired in time. The police started investigating but -- to his misfortune -- the Dog Owner was not detained. Angered by the tragic event that led to his sons death the Neighbor kidnapped his former friend the Dog Owner and with the help of a vet he amputated the Dog Owners right foot and removed his right eye. Proper anesthesia was administered and since the vet supervised everything the operations were carried out with considerable precision. Having trouble making sense of what had just happened over the course of a few days the Dog Owners 12-year-old son took a small handgun from his fathers collection and shot himself. The former Dog Owner has now his own show on a Christian radio station advocating peace and understanding.

I have to say it really depends on the person and what you wanna protect. I have Siberian Husky and he is very good at protecting me. It really depends on if you want to protect yourself or you stuff. Almost any dog that is raised around childern will protect them.

Yep Im partial as well. WGSD. Our dogs go everywhere with us and are very friendly. However if a stranger tried to come on our property w/out us being there to say it was okay they would probably eat them alive. Their bark and look alone should be enough to scare someone off I know it would work for me. www.whitesandkennels.com

In this day of sue happy people and lawyers looking to fatten their bank accounts I would stick to a breed that was bred to contain/detain an intruder with out mauling. This means a dog large enough to knock a 200 pound man off his feet and make him stay down. Some quick research will turn up the Bullmastiff as the only breed developed with these traits in mind. They have proven themselves capable of doing their job even muzzled. I cant think of another breed that can lay claim to that ability. Jason is 9 years old in this photo and still capable of doing what he was bred to do. PS I have owned GSD and many other breeds and 30 years ago after seeing what a Bullmastiff can do I switched to them although I have other breeds as just pets my Bullmastiffs are the only ones I would trust with my life.

I have had Bullmastiffs catch intruders and detain them until the police arrived. In each case the dog knocked the man down and kept knocking him down until he stayed put but the dogs did not bite. One of these captures was done by an 8 month old bitch puppy. None of these dogs was trained to protect most were show dogs and very well socialized. Dogs with strong guarding instincts need to be exposed to many people and human behaviors so they learn the difference between normal human weirdness and what is a threat to their home and family. I trust my Bullmastiffs judgement of body language 100.

I firmly believe that only police military and prison personale have a need for a biting protection dog. I have first hand experience with such animals of several breeds and I think they do not belong in the hands of the general public and dogs that have such strong working tendancies should not be sold as pets. I know there is a certain element of the public that needs the ego stroke of having a bad ass dog this is as anti-social as the gun toting red neck. I would much prefer a well socialized dog that knows a stranger has no business trying to take my 4 year old granddaughter from her yard than a dog that has to wait for someone to tell it to protect. But this is a personal preference based on many many years of dog training.

ha first of all you put a topic out there for anyone to comment on so i did just that. second the way that we train our protection dogs are not the same as the police and military dogs are trained i dont expect you to know that but just know that it can be done. my dogs are completly social and do play with young children just fine. that is the beauty of our training. i know its hard to believe but with the right training it can be done. so its nice that your a trainer but if you think that i have these dogs to sell and the general public cant control them then mabye you need to be trained the way i was. and just so you know most dogs unless they are trained to protect dont have the confidence to do it on their own. so if your waiting for that dog to protect your 4yr old grandaughter on its own....i wouldent. if the dog is trained correct it should be able to be friends with the person if was just bitting when you tell it to. and here is another picture of my big mean protection dog.

I give up you either have English as a secong language or are unusually dense. I have considerable experience with so-called properly trained and by -the-seat-of-the-pants trained dogs including exdrug and prison security dogs unless you are about my age 59 there is no way you have the experience and first hand knowledge I Ihave.A little research and reading thru the previous posts would explain why I advocate a dog that is bred to protect with out biting. I have spent time de-programing attack dogs also. I have spent a great deal of my life caring for dogs that have become a threat to the general public and would have been put down if I had not ben willing to risk my life to do so. I keep these dogs at my own expense until they die of old age. I firmly believe that attack trained dogs should remain in the hands of law inforcement and the military only. Enough said.

So, Ive wanting a companion/protection dog. I always hear a lot about needing to have a high prey drive and imported european bloodlines. So, is it possible to get a good protection GSD without paying an arm and leg? If you have a litter that is under $1,000 let me know. Ive seen these trained protection dogs going for $50,000. Im sorry, I just dont have that kind of money. Is it silly for me to expect that it is in the breeds nature to want to protect its family and territory? I am a breeder myself english bulldogs and I realize the value of a good lineage, but like I said, are there any good GSDs for protection at a reasonable price? What are some key words I should look for when browsing through ads? Thanks
