How to Choose the Right Breed for You and Your Family

Remember bringing your first-born home from the hospital? You probably felt happy, excited and perhaps a bit overwhelmed with the daunting task of giving them the best life possible. In many ways, bringing home a dog is very much the same.

Dogs provide you with unconditional loyalty and love, but your devoted four-legged companion comes at a price: time. Deciding to bring a dog into your home (and life) is a very important decision to consider. To begin with, there are several According to Choose Wisely, there are several questions you should ask yourself before deciding to buy or adopt a puppy:

  • Does my work schedule allow me time to take care of a dog?
  • What breed and size dog would mesh well with my current house members?
  • Should I consider a male or female dog?

After answering these questions and deciding that you still want a dog, Selecting the Right Pet can be narrowed down by dog personalities. For instance, if you want a small, very playful, active and affectionate dog, you might look into a Shih Tzu. Other dogs to consider might be Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, or Poodle. Keep in mind however, that although these dogs may be small, they are sometimes big on attitude.

But perhaps you are looking for something else and a small and very active dog doesn't necessarily fulfill your needs. Another dog to consider is Golden Retrievers. Golden Retrievers are large dogs who are particularly pack-oriented. In other words, a Golden Retriever Puppies needs interaction with people and should not be treated as a backyard dog. On the contrary, bringing a Golden Retriever home with you would work best if you are able to include him in family activities as much as possible. Although Golden Retrievers may require extra love and attention to be happy, the exchange for your time is complete loyalty and obedience. When they are older, Golden Retrievers are excellent activity dogs (walking, hiking, and hunting.

Of course, having a demanding work schedule with little room for flexibility doesn't mean you can't have a dog altogether. While many do require a lot of your time, there are some low maintenance breeds. For instance, if you are looking a medium-sized dog, an English Bulldog might be a great route to go. In fact, English Bulldogs don't require too much space except maybe a very comfy couch! Taking Care of an English Bulldog is a great option if you can fit in a light exercise a day (a short walk after work). An affectionate and loyal dog, English Bulldog's get along well with strangers and their short coat doesn't require high maintenance grooming.
