Akita puppies grow up to be extremely loyal dogs. Originating in Japan, these dogs are so trustworthy that Japanese mothers often entrusted their children under the Akita’s care during times of great hardship. Interestingly enough, the Akita is actually deemed one of Japan's national monuments and considered the country's official national dog. Akita puppies can grow to be up to 120 pounds and more than two feet tall so they're relatively large dogs. They have very thick, dense coats which come in any combination of brindle, white or pinto. One of the Akita's most distinguishing features is its thick, curled tail. Temperamentally, Akita’s are very observant and calm and show great intelligence. Though they are fearless and bold, it's easy for these qualities to get the best at them, as they can sometimes get aggressive if they're not shown proper leadership. Akita's are good family dogs only when children who are around the dog know how to display signs of leadership and can be obedient toward the dog.
