| advice on mating problem

| I have 2 adorable pomeraniansboth 26months old and would love to breed a litter from them. The bitch was in season last month and my male was very obligingthe urge was definately there as he wouldnt leave her aloneshe was also very willingbut try as he might not once did he manage to penetrate her which was obviously very frustrating for them both. There seemed to be nothing putting them off but both dogs are unexperienced so please can anyone give me some advice on this.Is it something they will overcome with maturity or could it be a health problem on the male dogs part and should I arrange a checkup with our vet.It is not a size issue as they are both the same height/weight and the male has fully maturedI would be very grateful for any helpthankyou

| I hold my female still and place a towel down for my male to stand on. They may be the right size for each other but your male may need help from you by holding the female in place he can stand on the folded towel and give a leg up so to speak. If the female moves away from him it would make it much harder for them to lock. Not all dogs lock but the important thing is to assure the sperm made it to the female. Once they have mated you can hold the female on her back and rub her belly for a bit so the sperm cant run out. I also use a small light towel to place over the females hips so that the male has something to hang on it and his nails don not dig into the females sides. I had the same problem starting out but after a few trys I got it right. Then the male does much better on his own. The first matings can be stressful but just take your time and try different angels until you find the one that works best for them.

| It will also help to make sure the hair is not in the way. Heavy coats should be brushed to the side and you can even trim the hair the hair from the tip of the male. Once they figure out how it done they will do much better. Holding the female will assure you they are safe as well. My fist pair did the same thing. Someone gave me the same advice and it worked like a charm. Good luck with your up coming season I hope your house is filled with the pat of tiny paws. Smile
