| Teaching my Basset Hound not to jump up.

| I am taking care of my neighbors 2 year old basset hound. He constantly jumps up on me and I want an easy way to get him to stop. First I bent down and petted him to let him see he shouldnt jump to get attention. Ive tried being stern and saying No. Ive tried ignoring him. Ive tried swatting him with a newspaper on the behind but he still jumps. He is long and reaches to my waist when he does this and I would like to teach him to stop. HELP

| Each dog is different when it comes to corrections since dogs within the same breed have different personalities and different behavior. I would advise to consult with a professional trainer. What works with our dogs is whenever a dog jumps on me I would bring my knee up to my chest thus making him slip off me and fall gently. After a few runs the dog understands he will not be able to hang on if he tries to jump on me and eventually he will stop.

| you should never swipe them away the best thing to do is put your knee up when he jumps and act like it dont bother you and if he dont lay the dog on its back and show him you are the boss and say NO but swiping thw way dony do anything to help put put you in a bad position. If this helps tell your other friends this because some people dont know how to do this and they have little kids and are scared to put thm in the floor with other pets. Well you dony have to anymore just try to use you knee put it up tp its chest and say NO. always say no if it is doing bad behavior. if you need anymore ?s Email me JaydaBamboo@aol.com

| oh and never let the dog slip by with it anyway possible because you feel sorry for it I know they may be cutebut thats not how it works but they may want more attention DO NOT prize them for bad behavior If you d this will become another problem. teach the as little pups right when you get them after 6 or 7 weeks old put a lot of pup. pads in their crate or where they stay get lots of excercise and give the dog lots of love to make the dog your companion and very affectionect the behavior goes a long way eith the pets. Email me if more questions needs to be asked JaydaBamboo@aol.com

| You have to understand the learing process of a dog, You have direct and indirect rewards, A jumping behavior is a created behavior by the owner, DO NOT USE THE KNEE method, In dog training you always have an action and reaction, this goes both ways. A dogs action Jumping the owener reaction is KNEE, when you respond to a dogs action you indireclt reward the dog for that behavior. To change a dogs behavior you have to stop paying the dog for its action, turn your back against the dog and walk away, ignore the dog, very fast the dog will sit down confused, no reaction to is action, NOW you praise the dog.
