Hi Kyle If your serious about showing my suggstion would be to contact the breeder you bought your dog from. The best help you can get is from a mentor. And usually if you recieved your dog from a show breederthey will be very happy to see the dog in the show ring. Handling classes are really a great place to learn not only for you but to socialize your dog and get him use to the noise and being around other dogs- people. George Alston has a good book out you can find it on ebay.

Im kind of in the same boat you are. Ive wanted to start showing my crested by having trouble starting...but I figured out the best way to start for when I do. You should really start by taking a handling class with a dog whether you have your show dog yet or not and practice. Handling classes can be hard to find depending upon where you are from. The best idea is to talk to local groomers and maybe pet stores to get information about local kennel clubs and handling classes. Maybe even go to your nearest dog show and ask around. SOMEONE somewhere is bound to have the info you need. Obedience class is ok too but the behavior a dog needs in the ring is a little different than in an obedience class... so it is best just to dive into a handling class.

I would reccommend contacting your dogs breeder for help. If the breeder doesnt live in your area maybe they can tell you who to contact. Also there are some things that happen at dog shows that arent very pleasant so you really need to travel with someone else who can advise you on how to best protect your dog against thieft or poisoning. Sadly there are people who would rather kill the competition than concentrate on breeding better dogs themselves. And you must always be on guard against the fanatics who believe dogs are better off dead than exlpoited as pets. I no longer show my Bullmastiffs for these reasons. I just couldnt take the stress of constant worry any more.

You can find info about showing dogs at the United Kennel Club www.ukcdogs.com which is located in Kalamazoo. AKC may also have info on their site. UKC lists their events dates and cities...I know there are some in Michigan. Attend a show and gain valuable insight. Study your breed standard to understand what judges are looking at proper stucture and movement. BOOKS Showing your dog by Richard Beauchamp Show Me by D. Caroline Coile. I buy from Amazon and most times you can find a used/ like new book. Ive been pleased with Amazon. Good Luck and maybe see you ringside sometime. www.raganrat.com
