| First of all anyone that calls themself a professional breeder should be avoided.
You need to be a student that wants to know everything about the breeding of dogs.
You need to find someone that has dogs and is breeding dogs that you admire and can learn from.
There is a lot involved with breeding dogs correctly. There is health testing that most are unaware of until one of their dogs is identified as having the problem.
Avoid dogs that are not UKC or AKC registered all of the rest of the registries are pet registries in the US. There is also the Canadian CKC that is a legitimate kennel club.

| My friend suggested working in a pet store to learn more about breeding dogs but that didnt make much sense to me. Dont pet stores just sell puppies not breed them? And I dont know anyone who breeds dogs how would i find someone to learn from?

| I recommend that you go to a dog show or two.
Do you have a dog? There are several activities that breeders enjoy with their dogs.
You are correct a pet store is not a good place to learn about breeding dogs.
You might look into working for a vet.

I highly recommend going to a few shows talk with the handlers. Talk with everyone and anyone. This helped me immensly in getting started some 25 yrs ago. Good luck. Cyndi Keeshond Garden

| I agree. Go to some dog shows talk with some breeders. Also contact your local kennel club and go to some meetings and talk to others there. Thats a place to start.

| You have received some great advice but be aware of the things that cause poor health. Many show breeders use inbreeding and linebreeding to keep or perfect type at the expense of health. Type is important for any breed however conformation and health should be a priority over type. What may be good for the outside is often not good for the inside. Just my humble opinion from talking to vets and seeing results of animals bred too close or experiencing their shortened life spans. Ask yourself why muts live longer than purebreeds and why so many purebreds have allergies and special dietary needs.

| VIP Kennel that isnt true.
Mutts are not healthier than purebreds hybrid vigor is a myth there will never be truth to that. There are testing results to prove that long so please dont believe that.
As far as show breeders using inbreeding this also is highly unlikely. Yes some have in the past but they dont now. Linebreeding is not harmful if you know what issues are in the lines.
Health should be important and that also requires a well put together dog.
Good luck in learning. Showing is a lot of fun whether performance or conformation

I thought id share a little about how I became involved in all this puppy stuff For the past few years Id raised Maltese and had always wanted a Pekingese. I started researching them I attended college for Environmental and Animal Sciences and was always taking tons of classes that allowed me to pick my own topic of interest. So I kept writing and researching on Pekingese. I grew up in a small town and had been trying to find one for years locally with NO LUCK I still loved Pekingese had the cute puppy calenders of the breed and was a part of a few Pekingese clubs online i really love pekees And after 7 years of research and longing I found one from a breeder who had a stud in KANSAS and IOWA. I will never forget bringing my first pekingese home. She is tri colored and mostly red and white black face and on back I fell in love with her instantly. She had immaculate health records and a perfect line of pedigrees dating back for years and years. Id talked to the woman who had sold her to me frequently and decided I too would want to breed her someday. It took 4 years to find the right stud. He had to also have the highest quality in bloodlines/pedigree and I also wanted him to be completely different then her so I bought an all Black Pekingese. Hes quite striking Well.. they made history on their own I just kept them healthy and made sure they were right for eachother to have healthy quality puppies.

| I would suggest not becoming a breeder. Its hard taking care of puppies and selling them on if you can even find good homes.
The vet expenses are way out there too. And unless you have quality dogs that can make puppies as good or better than themselves you shouldnt even bother breeding them.
Go to a show. Buy a show quality puppy of your favorite breed. Raise it. Train it. Show it. Then you will at least have the bare bones knowledge of what it takes when you have your own puppies and the conformation that is needed to make the dogs win at shows and live healthy lives. If your puppy did well at the shows at least at state level conformation shows held by UKC or AKC then you might consider breeding it. Otherwise spay/neuter it and retire it to be your loving pet. And if you havent gotten sick of dogs showing or the thought of breeding your own litter find another puppy and start over.

| Dog breeders, big or small are all dog breeders. And I would hope that they would all be professional about what they do.
If you want to raise puppies as a full time job, then thats as honorable of a job as anything else despite what some people think. Although the pay sucks, there is no such thing as weekends or holidays, and youll never get a night off until your dead or retire but few rarely retire.
Unfortunately way to many dog breeders have fallen into the ARlight mentality animal rights light. They are appologetic for being a dog breeder, they try to classify themselves as a hobby, home, or private breeder. The fact is, wether you breed one litter every ten years or one litter a month, you are a dog breeder.
No matter if you show, do performance, or just want to breed your pet, you need to take your path seriously, professionally, and with the best educated mind you can get, so that you will do more than just produce puppies, you will produce better puppies, suprerior puppies, that will make you proud.
Anyone that says raising puppies isnt a real job hasnt done it or they havent done it right. Its one of the hardest jobs you can take on and its a job that you cant take a break from. It owns you. You live for it. And everything you do has to revolve around the animals you have dedicated your life too. As a dog breeder you are going to have to educate yourself to the ins and outs of your breed. You are going to have to understand canine reproduction. How to vaccinate, what vaccines work and what does not. How to worm. How to use a microscope to do fecals, how to AI a dog, how to take temps, give shots, palpatate for puppies, deliver puppies, diagnose hypocalcemia, give fluds, recognize common puppy diseases, learn how to treat puppy diseases, learn how to prevent them with better sometimes more expensive meds than what a vet will have.
You are going to have to expand your knowledge base, be willing to learn, study hard what you know and think you know then realize that something new just fell into the mix.
You will have to be able to deal with people. When they are disapointed, pushy, happy, sad...you will have to learn to spot the liars, the conartists, the people who would hurt you or the puppy you might sell them. And there will be times you will be wrong and youll have to spend the money to rescue the animal at a loss.
You will have to face death, illness, and suffering head on. You will have to be able to do the right thing for the dog putting your own emotions aside. You will have to be practical and pragmatic, setting aside your emotions until a later time.
You will have to deal with stress, conflict, and be able to admit when you are wrong and prove when you are right.
The hardest part is you cannot learn these things from a book, or a mentor. You have to learn them from experience and a combination of reading, studying, talking to others, and learning from the old timers.
Most of all you will have to accept your failures along with your success....and there will be failures, many of them.

| I have been breeding for over 30 years and am asked this question by young people all the time. First thing you need to learn is why do you want to do this. Ifg its for money then I would suggest you look elsewhere. lol But best way to begin is find the breed your interested in then find someone who has been breeding those dogs for a long time. They have already made all the mistakes and in most cases have learned how to avoid them or at the least limit them. Then volunteer to help them with thier dogs at shows or even in thier kennel. Ask questions, study the breed and then be objective in your appraisals of the breed. You dont just go by two dogs and say your a breeder. I good breeder will research both side of a pedigree before they make the decision to breed. Just becuase each side has a great pedigree does not mean if you breed them together the puppies will be outstanding. So research is as important to the breeding as the dogs themselves. Good luck in your endeavor and take your time. Knowledge is important but if you do not know how to apply it then its as dangerous as a loaded gun.

| I AGREE THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PROFESSIONAL BREEDERS, ONLY GOOD REPUTABLE BREEDERS. IF YOU DONT LIKE CLEANING UP POOO DONT BECOME A BREEDER IF YOU DONT LIKE STAYING UP ALL NIGHT HELPING A MOTHER WHELP HER PUPS DONT BECOME A BREEDER, BE PREPAIRED TO RUSH TO A EMERGENCY CLINIC FROM TIME TO TIME IT DONT ALWAYS GO SMOOTHLY. YOU MUST HOVE TIME TIME TIME PUPPIES NEED HANDLEING FROM BIRTH ON. I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT.....
I SUGGEST FINDING A GOOD REPUTABE BREEDER IN YOUR AREA WATCH AND SEE WHAT THEY GO THREW EACH LITTER AND THEN IF YOU STILL WANT TO BREED THAT BREEDER CAN MENTOR YOU. ALWAYS START WITH GOOD BREEDING STOCK. HEALTHY TESTED PARENTS. GOOD LUCK
