How do I do this?
I just adopted a beautiful 4yr old rottie and to cover the cost of him I would love to stud him. He is AKC registered as are his parents and he has one of the greatest temperments Ive ever seen. Ive been doing a lot of research and I know he is not suitable for show. But any female dog would be lucky to have this gentle giant as the sire. Any suggestions for a newcomer? What do I look for in a breeder what do I charge What do I need?

Why isnt he show worthy? I am amazed that you were able to adopt a dog that was not neutered as most reputable breeders will not sell a pup that is not show worthy as a breeding prospect. Have you researched the genetic defects of the Rotts? All dogs carry the potential of producing pups with health issues. Some breeds more then others. Have you researched the dogs on his pedigree? IMO breeding dogs solely to produce pet puppies should not be done.

He has no health defects but in researching the quality of traits judges would be apt to look for he doesnt qualify...I think. Remember Im a new owner His ears are perfect shape however the very tips curl up just a bit. He has black lips but his gums are spotted with pink. He is also classified as a wet dog with fairly loose hanging flews. His head is strong and masculine his muzzle is straight but I think his eyes are a bit on the light side. He has no titles and was never shown. After researching I was also surprised the breeder did not have him neutered. Why shouldnt he be bred for great puppies? Hes strong fit with a wonderful caninality. Are these dogs just for show? Why not for a wonderful pet? I dont understand...

My point is that whenever one breeds a litter of puppies they are not all show pups those are the pups that are sold as pets with spay/neuter contracts. Those that breed for show or a specific purpose will end up with a few pups available for show. http//www.upei.ca/~cidd/intro.htm So has your dog been CERF tested BAER tested OFA evaluated? Serious breeders will want these tests done on your stud to screen for obvious health issues. He also needs a Brucellosis test before every mating the female will also need the test. Breeding is an expensive time consuming venture when done correctly.

you might want to get OFA hips and elbows done as well as CERF those dogs are plagued with elbow dysplasia
